Space for Passengers and Cargo
The Ford Explorer was always relatively spacious, but Ford has upped the comfort for 2020. Interestingly, Ford has done it by reducing seating. In previous years, the Ford Explorer had space for seven. In 2020, most models only seat six, but it creates more space for those in the backseat. The wheelbase was also increased by 6.3 inches. This ensures no other SUV delivers more hip room in the front and second-row or passenger headroom.
Cargo space also increases from 43.9 cubic feet to 47.9 cubic feet. This extra room allows you to easily fit all your grocery bags or the suitcases you’ll need on your next vacation.
Innovative Tech Additions
This SUV seems almost space-age compared to its predecessor. The traditional analog gauges are gone, replaced with a high-tech digital instrument display. The standard 8-inch infotainment touch screen is nearly twice the size of the 2019s model. This makes it much easier to operate and view at a glance when you’re on the move. It’s compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and can become a Wi-Fi hot spot for up to 10 devices.

A 10.1-inch vertical touch screen, a wireless charging pad, and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo are optional upgrades. The top Platinum trim has a much larger 12.3-inch gauge panel with 3D graphics.
The Ford Explorer also has a range of driving modes. If you’d rather shut out the tech and focus on the road, try calm mode. It hides everything but your speedometer and the time. Safety options still operate in the background.
New Driver Assistance Features
Auto experts claimed the Ford Explorer’s limited active safety tech let them down in 2019. There are no such problems in 2020 with modern driver-assist features ushering in a new era. Automated emergency braking and high-beam headlights step in when you need them. Lane keeping assistance ensures you don’t drift into the wrong lane. Cross-traffic and blind-spot monitoring provide an extra set of eyes. The Limited version also has adaptive cruise control with lane centering. All systems function well, although similar alert tones can be confusing.
Towing Capacity Gets a Boost
Ford hasn’t changed the Explorer’s engine sizes in 2020, but clever tweaks boost horsepower and towing capacity. The base model’s 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine lets the Explorer tow up to 5,300 pounds. That’s 3,000 pounds more than the 2019 base model.
If you want to carry a little more, upgrade to the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 motor. It produces 365 horsepower, the same as last year’s 3.5-liter motor. With this engine, the 2020 Ford Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds, a 12% boost on the 2019 Explorer’s peak power.
Rugged SUVs like the Ford Explorer are flooding the marketplace, but few have the quality features of the latest Explorer model. Consider this superior vehicle when you’re searching for your next SUV.
